ENGLISH VERSION

Earlier today, I have hosted in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, a meeting of the informal group entitled Friends of Serbia, with the participation of various representatives of the Serbian government and General Assembly, as well as several Members of the European Parliament and other fellow colleagues. Friends of Serbia is a key informal group that gathers Members of the European Parliament across multiple countries, representing a wide array of political groups. It is aimed at monitoring, debating as well as supporting Serbia’s path towards joining the European Union, in an informal setting. This morning’s meeting comes in addition to the 6th meeting of the EU-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee, taking place in Strasbourg on 13 and 14 September 2017.

In the State of the Union speech held on 13 September by the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, it was stated that during the current mandate, which ends in 2019, there will be no new waves of EU enlargement. However, what has been underlined is the fact that in February 2018, EU and Serbia will set a more defined strategy in this direction.

Our discussions today, during the Friends of Serbia meeting, concluded that 2020 is probably the most realistic timeline to finalize the accession procedures.

As a Romanian politician, this news is fantastic as we are delighted to have our neighbour join the European Union.

During today’s meeting, we have also discussed about various regional cooperation programmes between Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria and Hungary. Added to that, we also touched upon the enhancement of Serbian youth mobility within the EU. In this context, Romania was given as a good example for its strategy to increase salaries in order to do everything possible so that doctors, professors, engineers, or other professionals are actually encouraged to stay in the country.

All in all, the signals coming from Brussels are great and all I can do is encourage Serbia and its people to press on this great path of reforms and development.
